CAMBRIDGE, UK – September 22, 2026 - Linaro, the open-source engineering organization accelerating deployment of Arm-based technology, today extends its warmest congratulations to Valve Corporation on the official launch and opening of order reservations for the Steam Frame, Valve’s groundbreaking wireless, Linux-powered VR device.
Linaro has worked alongside Valve and the broader open-source community, helping advance the upstream foundation required for Linux gaming on Arm. Today we mark another major milestone in open-source gaming hardware. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 system-on-chip and running SteamOS, the Steam Frame brings native Linux gaming, low-latency streaming, and standalone playback to an innovative form factor.
Powering the Open Source Foundation
Bringing standard Linux gaming workloads to ARM64 architecture at low-latency performance requires deep architectural alignment across the Linux stack. Building upon the joint effort previously highlighted during Valve’s mission to expand Linux-powered gaming devices, Linaro’s engineering teams collaborated closely with Valve engineers to refine and upstream critical platform components.
Linaro’s contributions focused on two crucial infrastructure layers:
U-Boot Bootloader Enhancements: Linaro engineers helped deliver fast, robust, and secure boot pathways optimized for high-performance ARM64 platforms.
Linux Kernel Upstreaming & Optimization: Working alongside Valve and the broader Linux community, Linaro engineers helped upstream device drivers, SoC enablement patches, power-management frameworks, and refinements to the mainline Linux kernel. This upstream-first philosophy ensures long-term stability, continuous performance gains, and seamless compatibility across SteamOS updates.
Congratulating the Engineering Teams
“The launch of the Steam Frame is a testament to what open collaboration can achieve when open source meets high-performance products, with Linaro uniquely positioned to be the bridge between the two worlds,” said Davide Ricci, VP and GM, Solutions and Services at Linaro. “We want to congratulate the brilliant engineering teams at both Valve and Linaro. Thanks to their joint dedication across the Linux kernel, U-Boot, and the broader ARM ecosystem, gamers are getting a high-performance, open platform that pushes the boundaries of hardware and software integration.”
As order reservations open for the Steam Frame, Linaro remains committed to supporting Valve and the open-source community in optimizing Linux kernel capabilities, advancing ARM64 graphics performance, and empowering the next generation of open gaming platforms.
